Chapel in Winter

Technique & Process

Shot on the medium format Fujifilm GFX 100s and GF 30mm Tilt-shift lens. A tripod was necessary in the low light. The tilt-shift lens enabled perspective control and composition to include the entire geometric structure without converging lines. Lastly, lots of patience was necessary to find an evening with the right amount of fog and for a worshiper to approach the chapel.

Concept & Narrative

The Altmühlthal (Old mill valley) in Bavaria is known for its fog phenomenon along the Danube river during Autumn and Winter. The eerie Winter atmosphere is a characteristic of the Altmühlthal and what I set out to show in this image. The sharp geometry of the chapel, the shimmering black timber facade, the blue-hour tones and thick, low-lying fog give the viewer a sense of discomfort.
