Doca Linear Park
Natureza Urbana

SHORTLIST URBAN DESIGN | Urban Design & Masterplans

Project Description

The intervention transforms a 1.2 km canal into a multifunctional linear park through an integrated approach that combines landscape architecture, hydraulic engineering, and nature-based solutions. Native vegetation, phytoremediation systems, permeable surfaces, flood-resilient infrastructure, and microdrainage improve water quality, enhance biodiversity, mitigate flooding, and restore ecological functions while creating a cooler and more comfortable urban environment. Elevated walkways, viewpoints, cycle paths, playgrounds, sports facilities, seating gardens, kiosks, and shaded public spaces create an accessible, inclusive, and vibrant park that reconnects people with the water and encourages everyday use. Developed through community engagement and integrated with broader sanitation, drainage, and urban regeneration initiatives, the project proves how ecological restoration, climate resilience, and high-quality public space can converge into a lasting legacy for Belém and the Amazon.

Project Concept

The Doca Linear Park reimagines the relationship between Belém and its waters by transforming a formerly degraded canal into ecological, social, and cultural infrastructure. Built over the historic Igarapé das Almas, the project recovers the memory of a landscape that was gradually erased by car-centered urbanization, restoring water as a structuring element of the urban landscape. Conceived as one of COP30's main urban legacies, the park establishes a continuous public space where nature, mobility, leisure, and environmental regeneration coexist. Inspired by the understanding that rivers are living systems carrying both ecological and cultural knowledge, the project proposes reconciliation rather than replacement. Through an integrated landscape strategy, it reconnects people with the Amazonian territory, demonstrating how urban infrastructure can evolve from a purely functional system into a resilient public realm that strengthens biodiversity, identity, and everyday life.
