Project Description

The Ganga Leheri Temple is built using local brick, inspired by nearby brick kilns. Set on an elevated plinth, it features a bridge that connects to the Ganges, allowing tidal waters to reach its base. The layout includes a mandapa, garbhagriha, and a corbelled brick shikhara. A transitional utility block uses light and shadow to enhance spatial experience, while a skylight brings natural light into the sanctum. Miniature shikhara-inspired columns house black stone niches for diyas and idols. The open-plan design and adjacent plaza support both rituals and public gatherings, creating a responsive, multifunctional architectural space.

Project Concept

The Ganga Leheri Temple is envisioned not just as a space of worship, but as a sanctuary that fuses spirituality, regional identity, and public participation. Drawing inspiration from the brick kilns of Bengal, the temple seeks to root itself in local traditions while evolving as a contemporary spiritual landscape. The visitor’s journey begins along a meandering pathway that slows the pace, encouraging mindfulness and deeper connection with the surroundings—transforming the approach into a moment of quiet spiritual preparation.
