SHORTLIST ARCHITECTURE | Renovations

Project Description

Originally designed by a renowned architect, the space comprised four distinct blocks, each dedicated to different cuisines. This segmentation, once functional for a canteen, has been reinterpreted to host curated displays of design excellence. The redesign prioritized seamless spatial transitions and enhanced natural light quality, achieved through strategic interventions. The removal of original rooftops, replaced with skylights, allowed natural light to flood the interiors, creating an optimal environment for exhibitions and fostering a connection with the outdoors.

Project Concept

Kalavaani exemplifies the art of adaptive reuse, transforming a utilitarian canteen into a sophisticated gallery space for exhibitions. Situated within Swabhumi, a cultural hub envisioned by the AmbujaNeotia Group, the project reflects a harmonious blend of heritage and innovation. Swabhumi draws its inspiration from the architectural language of rajkutirs—traditional royal homes that celebrate Kolkata’s cultural and historical richness. Kalavani integrates this ethos while redefining its purpose, establishing a dialogue between the past and the contemporary.
