Nordøstamager School offers an innovative approach to education and community engagement. With inviting architecture and integrated leisure zones, the school fosters interactive learning experiences. An exterior staircase transforms into a vibrant city garden, while inside, a versatile ground floor hosts communal spaces for all ages. Natural light floods through skylights, illuminating a central staircase, symbolizing connectivity, and safety. It redefines community architecture, prioritizing movement, flexibility, and social cohesion, creating a dynamic educational ecosystem where learning exceeds traditional boundaries.
Our inspiration for the Nordøstamager School project stems from a growing disconnect within communities. Recognizing this trend, we were driven to create spaces that not only address functional needs, but also foster engagement and strengthen local bonds. Envisioning the school as more than just an educational institution, but rather as a vibrant hub for community interaction.
One of the key elements of the Nordøstamager School project was to accommodate the diverse user needs and function of the project on a relatively small plot. The school needed to house ten grade levels, sports facilities, and after-school activities for both the children and the local community. To make the most of the limited space available, the design focused on creating multiple double-use facilities and utilizing almost all the plot space on the ground floor. This allowed for elevated outdoor and play areas to be created. These elevated outdoor facilities are also open to the local community, accessible through the outside stairs, creating a seamless transition between the urban cityscape and the school’s architecture. As the local users climb the stairs, an outside playscape opens above the city’s noise and traffic. Here, the local community can enjoy a break under full-size trees while the kids have fun at the play sets and the climbing walls.
Given the diverse array of facilities and functions fitted onto a small plot, our design had to be meticulously mindful of the use of space. This consideration led us to adopt a forward-thinking approach, considering evolving educational needs and teaching methodologies. To future-proof the structure, we incorporated double-use spaces and durable materials throughout, promoting adaptability and innovative utilization of the premises. This approach not only enhances flexibility but also contributes to the building’s energy efficiency.
In harmonizing with the surrounding urban landscape, our architectural design aimed for seamless integration. We achieved this by employing red ceramic terracotta, echoing the hue of Copenhagen’s ubiquitous red brick structures. This choice visually aligns the school with its environment, creating a cohesive presence within the cityscape. To maximize natural light, most of the building’s height was oriented towards the north. This also ensured that the school did not block sunlight in the surrounding buildings, maintaining a feeling of openness.
