The Posthus is a hybrid timber construction. Reinforced concrete ceilings rest on steel columns and are reinforced by a concrete stairwell core. The exterior walls are prefabricated wall panels in timber frame construction, inserted in two layers between the ceilings.
The hipped roof responds to the round airspace with a horizontal solid wood ceiling, from which a circular hole with a diameter of 3 m has been cut out. The bat-like shape is created by a steel arch, on which the curvature of the roof surface is formed by the arrangement of solid wood rafters. The roof boarding was attached to this in multiple curves.
Viewed from the outside, the Bregenzerwald still presents a cohesive landscape of meadows and forests, in which the small-scale, disciplined settlement areas stand out. At the same time, the urbanity and craftsmanship of some town centres are impressive. This confident attitude served as a model for our approach to designing the central space. The Posthus is the new gateway to the Bregenzerwald. The strong, point-shaped structure with a hipped roof creates a new landmark in the town Centre. The external appearance is designed to link regional craftsmanship, which is still alive today, with the collective memory of the Baroque master builders of the Bregenzerwald.
