SHORTLIST ARCHITECTURE | Garden Landscape

Project Description

Located in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil, this 120 m² landscape project was developed in dialogue with the architecture by Jader Almeida. The proposal creates a three-dimensional landscape in which vegetation extends beyond the ground plane to occupy different heights and levels of the building. At the entrance, tropical species of varying scales form a dense composition along the circulation paths. Foliage with contrasting dimensions, textures and movement creates successive layers of planting while softening the transition between the street and the architecture. On the upper levels, jabuticaba trees (Plinia cauliflora) are planted in suspended planters integrated into the metallic structure. By positioning trees in unexpected locations, the project visually lifts the arboreal layer from the ground and creates the perception of a suspended landscape. Cascading pothos complement this strategy, extending downward through different planes and reinforcing the vertical continuity.

Project Concept

The project is based on the idea of expanding the garden beyond ground level, allowing vegetation to occupy different heights and become an integral part of the architecture itself. The landscape is structured in layers. At ground level, dense tropical planting surrounds the circulation paths, creating an immersive experience. As the garden rises, jabuticaba trees (Plinia cauliflora) emerge from suspended planters integrated into the structure, while cascading pothos establish visual connections between different levels. The structure and metallic mesh façade act as filters and frames for the vegetation, creating shifting relationships between transparency, shadow and depth throughout the space. The contrast between the precision of the built elements and the organic growth of the plants reinforces the presence of nature within the building. Rather than simply surrounding the architecture, the garden inhabits it, transforming vegetation into an integral part of the spatial experience.
