The Netherlands is one of the world’s leading food producers. Although the country is relatively small in size, its agricultural output competes with global giants like Brazil and the United States.
This remarkable achievement is made possible by highly efficient Dutch production methods, which rely heavily on advanced greenhouse technologies and laboratory-based crop innovation.
Tafel exemplifies this spirit of innovation and efficiency. It is home to a cutting-edge laboratory food production center that brings together science, technology, and entrepreneurship. The facility is organized into three key sectors: a world-class research center
Although the Sloterdijk Stationskwartier is successful in economic terms, it falls short in terms of human scale. Due to the train tracks and wide avenues, the land becomes fragmented, resulting in disconnected and isolated plots. To cross the neighborhood from north to south, pedestrians currently have only one option: to pass through the Sloterdijk train station. The proposal being presented aims to eliminate this barrier. By introducing elevated passageways that span train tracks, major roads, and even traverse existing buildings, Tafel adds a new dimension to Sloterdijk Stationskwartier—a human-scale plane designed for connectivity, walkability, and urban life.
The name Tafel, Dutch for “table”, symbolizes the project’s core mission: bringing people and places together. On a spatial level, it functions as connective infrastructure, bridging the fragmented northern and southern parts of the site. On a social level, it creates a welcoming public realm, centered around a food hall and outdoor spaces that encourage community interaction and shared experiences. Like a table, Tafel becomes a place of meeting, exchange, and connection—both physically and socially.
