The Nest is a low-impact, off-grid retreat that redefines sustainable prefabricated design in remote contexts.
Perched atop the highest elevation of Keats Island, BC, the home is composed of two rotated geometric volumes, creating a compact yet expansive three-level living experience. Prefabricated and airlifted into place, the structure integrates seamlessly with the rugged terrain and forest canopy, reflecting a deep sensitivity to site. Powered by solar energy and equipped with sustainable systems and materials throughout, The Nest exemplifies how thoughtful, context-driven design can foster meaningful connections between people and place.
The island and site context had a profound influence from the very beginning.
The serenity of the highest elevation, with panoramic views of Howe Sound, offered a rare kind of luxury: the sensation of having the entire island to yourself. The site’s rugged topography, moss-covered bedrock, and dense evergreen canopy called for a design rooted in reverence and thoughtful integration.
When the clients proposed the name The Nest, it immediately resonated. It evoked a sense of shelter, intimacy, and belonging—all qualities we aimed to embody. We explored the nest not only as a symbol, but as a spatial concept: shaped by circular movement and a deep connection to place.
The result is an elegant interplay of two rotated geometric volumes, forming a compact yet sophisticated three-level living experience. The Nest is designed to restore and inspire—an eco-friendly, self-sufficient retreat that reflects and responds to its unique setting.
